Case Study:
SPAR (Student Profile and Assessment Record)
Client Overview
The IEEE (Eye-triple-E) is a non-profit, technical
professional association of more than 377,000 individual
members in 150 countries. The full name is the Institute
of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., although
the organization is most popularly known and referred to
by the letters I-E-E-E. Through its members, the IEEE is
a leading authority in technical areas ranging from
computer engineering, biomedical technology and
telecommunications, to electric power, aerospace and
consumer electronics, among others.
Client Needs
IEEE had two needs. The first was to provide engineering
students with a means for recording, tracking and
analyzing their educational activities through the life
of their degree program. The system was to serve to
prepare students for the Career Asset Management system
also offered by IEEE. It would also provide students
with a ready-made resume upon graduation.
The second need was to gather evaluations of the
engineering programs being offered by various
universities to determine if the universities are
meeting curriculum goals and should therefore continue to
qualify for accreditation.
The Solution
A web database was required. The system had to support
all browsers and operating systems. The system was
deployed on a Microsoft Internet Information server
hosting an ASP application talking to an Oracle
database.
