Case Study: Community Linkages
Project
Client Overview
Community Grants and Planning, P.A. is a consulting firm
that helps municipalities find, apply for and obtain
state and federal grants. They provide research,
proposal writing, implementation and monitoring services
for successful applications. As grants are most often
used for improvements in the municipality it often
becomes necessary to make funding and operational
decisions for the grants based upon objective
statistical data.
The Need
Bergen County, New Jersey is one of Community Grants and
Planning's clients. The county recognized the need to
appropriately place mental health patients in
communities in the county. A set of objective placement
criteria was needed, but before a decision methodology
could be implemented, demographic data on patients
needed to be collected. This data was kept in disparate
systems by health care providers.
The Solution
A web database application was ideal for the situation.
Data managers at different locations within the county
needed to enter data to a single easy to access and easy
to use system. Having a web accessible database meant
that data could be entered and reviewed at any location
that had browser access, with minimal staff training.
A challenging part of the project was working with a
committee chairman to get agreement from the members on
the set and format of information to be collected.
Microsoft Access was the database of choice because the
county wanted to do ad-hoc reporting with current staff.
The system was deployed on a Microsoft Internet
Information server hosting an ASP.NET application.
